The ES Public Works Department area of responsibility includes water distribution, wastewater collection-treatment and streets.  This entails operation and maintenance of the Water system, Sewer system, Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), and Street system.  Ancillary duties include publicly owned retaining walls, yard waste pick-up, and maintenance of Black Bass and Lake Leatherwood dams.  Public Works coordinates closely with other city departments assuring that our quality of life is maintained.  Safety of the public and our employees is paramount. Note from the director: Although we are a government entity, we pride ourselves in emulating a business enterprise.  As such, evaluation of work priorities and projects require close scrutiny of their associated costs and benefits.  Limited resources demand that frequent and difficult priority decisions are made for the betterment of the city.  As a community, we need to understand and keep this in mind as we all work together for the future success of Eureka Springs.

Foresight in planning by Eureka Springs along with three neighboring communities formed the Carroll-Boone Water District (CBWD) during the 1970‚Äö decade.   The CBWD facility is located west of the city on beautiful Beaver Lake is capable of providing up to 24 MGD of quality water to the Eureka Springs, Berryville, Green Forest and Harrison communities.

Dedicated employees of ES Public Works maintain the distribution system to minimize disruptions of service to your home or business.  This entails monthly testing of the system, expedited repairs as necessary, monthly meter readings and working with our customers.  Eureka Springs is proud of the fact that there is a fire hydrant located within 500‚Äö of every home and business within our city limits.

Maintaining our city streets is a continuing priority for Public Works.  Whether during an emergency, e.g., ice storm de-icing, or ongoing pothole repair, signage, sweeping or other duties, these activities are most important to the safety of our citizens and visitors.  We take this responsibility most seriously.  Although among the state‚Äö lowest population density areas with 330 folks per square mile, the city has 155 winding streets equating to 39 linear miles.  Coupled with our terrain, the area presents a substantial challenge to maintenance and planning.  Green‚Äö areas in, around and between these byways are also maintained by us with a goal of keeping Eureka Springs beautiful.

The Eureka Springs Wastewater Treatment facility (WWTP) is located at 100 Highway 23 North.  WWTP is just north of the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railroad Depot.  Our treatment facility employs two new 500,000 gallon Sequential Batch Reaction Processing units.  The two units together provide a capacity of .9 MG effluent per day of targeted treatment to a stage such that the final bio-solids mass product following aging is suitable for use as compost.  Thus alleviating cost associated with alternatives such as landfill.  Effluent to the receiving stream, its aquatic life, and ecosystem will continue to reap benefits through our stewardship.

An important reminder for all of us!  Everything allowed down our drains affects our WWTP‚Äö efficiency and cost of operation.  Cooking oil is a major cause of problems with water treatment.  Please remember to dispose of cooking oils in a responsible manner and not down your home or business drains.  Collect such oils in a container and take it to the recycling center.

CURB-SIDE YARD WASTE RECYCLING COLLECTION

Tree limbs and bagged leaves pick-up is provided on a monthly basis through Public Works.  Tree limbs for pick-up are limited in size; not to exceed 3 "diameter x 6 " long.  Curb-side pick-up begins on the third Monday of each month; Tuesday if Monday is a city holiday.  You must call-in prior to the pick-up date to schedule this service.  Yard waste may also be dropped off for recycling on Wednesdays from 7:30AM to 3:30PM; closed 12:00 to 1:00 for lunch.  The location is below the Public Works shop.  Please stop by the office or shop if you require assistance.

SPRING CLEAN-UP

Each spring, typically late April, Spring Clean-Up campaign information is published in the local paper and on back of water bills.  For a reasonable charge, such items to be discarded as refrigerators, microwave ovens, TV, furniture, tires and other items will be picked-up at your residence or business.  Following the announcement, you will need to drop by the Public Works office at 3174 Van Buren to purchase tags for this once a year‚Äö pick-up.
